6.2: Do I need a Standard Chuck Alignment Guide?

A Standard Chuck Alignment Guide is REQUIRED when using BullseyeBore Core with hex shank chucks, chucks with small front faces, or any small chuck including 3/8" (0.375") keyed or keyless chucks and 1/4" (0.25") hex shank chucks. These smaller chucks create a risk of lateral displacement where the BullseyeBore Core can slide across the flat chuck face during drilling operations or electric braking.

The alignment guide is NOT required for standard 1/2" (0.5") keyed or keyless chucks. These larger chucks provide sufficient flat metallic surface area for the magnetic hold to keep BullseyeBore Core securely in place without the risk of sliding.

Even when using 1/2" chucks where the alignment guide isn't required, it's still recommended for better performance in two situations. First, if you frequently mount and dismount BullseyeBore Core, the alignment guide ensures consistent centering each time, which improves balance and rotational stability during drilling operations. Second, if you want optimal alignment on any standard chuck, the guide provides better drilling performance overall since most standard chucks benefit from proper alignment.

Quick reference for decision making:

  • Hex shank or small chuck → Use alignment guide (required)
  • 1/2" chuck with frequent use → Use alignment guide (recommended)
  • 1/2" chuck with occasional use → Alignment guide optional but beneficial

The use of a Standard Chuck Alignment Guide typically prevents both issues and is recommended. Standard Chuck Alignment Guides are inexpensive, and we always recommended purchasing at least one set to carry and optionally use with BullseyeBore Core.
